From the Mission Team: Fast starting this weekend - July 11 - 17
The Northern Illinois Annual Conference legislation 700.23 asks us to support fasts and prayer inspired by Isaiah 58 which teaches that a "true fast" is undertaken in service of "loosening the chains of injustice." As Christians we must practice radical hospitality to all people. These fasts and prayer vigils are part of a national effort begun on June 8 to have 8 weeks of rolling participation in prayer and fasting for Arizona. Illinois has been asked to be a part of this effort for the week of July 11-17. They are sponsored by many religious groups including the United Methodist General Board of Church and Society. If you so choose, you can register your prayer vigil at http://changetakesfaith.org/ Or ask Ellen Star, Kathy Verschoor or Pastor Vickie for more details.

        29 - Kathy Verschoor

In Memory of Marion Farnsworth Van
We recently learned through the mail that Marion Farnsworth Van passed away. We don't have an exact date of death, (her birthday would be on July 23) but she was in her late 90's. She was a dear, faithful member for many, many years. She was still writing notes to the congregation several times a year and still making pledges to support this church. Please say a prayer for her family and a prayer of thanksgiving for Marion's life and her dedication to IPUMC. For more information, contact Joyce in the church office.

Activity around the church
We have the Polish American Group with us again this summer for six weeks on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 - 5 in our fellowship hall and around our church grounds. So you will see even more activity than usual during the week around the corner of Grace and Keeler. This is an important program for these youth who otherwise may not have a place to go during the summer months.

Please keep all those who have suffered loss or illness, lack of work, heartbreak or other life challenges in your prayers. Also raise up your joys!
        CHICAGO, ILL. June 29, 2010 -
The Northern Illinois Conference (NIC) of the United Methodist Church (UMC) has now raised well over $500,000 for Haiti earthquake relief, donated several tons of relief supplies and has committed to long-term assistance with the people of Haiti.

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in January killed more than 230,000 people, collapsed more than 225,000 homes and impacted 3 million people.

Among those who lost their lives in this devastating earthquake were the Reverends Sam Dixon and Clint Rabb of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Dixon and Rabb were in Port-au-Prince to meet with members of the Methodist Church of Haiti to talk about ways to improve and develop the country.

At their annual conference in June, members of the Northern Illinois Conference voted overwhelmingly to continue fund raising efforts, to engage in advocacy campaigns that work toward an end to the discriminatory treatment of Haitian refugees and to maintain a presence in solidarity with the Haitian people long after the cameras leave.

Worldwide, the UMC has collected well over $18 million for Haiti relief work. To donate money or relief supplies to UMCOR, please visit http://www.umcor.org.

The Northern Illinois Conference, led by Bishop Hee-Soo Jung, is one of the United Methodist Church's 63 regions in the United States. There are nearly 400 UM churches in the cities, suburbs and towns of Northern Illinois. Find more information about the NIC at http://www.umcnic.org.

Celebrating Graduation Day

May 14 – Graduation ceremonies for students of Garrett Evangelical Seminary. Keep in your prayers these graduates who are close to us here at Irving Park United Methodist! They all receive their Masters of Divinity today and move on to their commissions, or additional steps in their work for our Lord.
Teri Lafferty (she is a member of our church and is staying in Chicago so we’ll look forward to seeing Teri in church soon to congratulate her).
Stephanie Escher (with us at IPUMC for a little longer as music director)
Emily Slavicek (returning to Michigan where she will be a Lead Pastor, see details below)
Adam and Ashley Barlow-Thompson (Adam was the student pastor before Emily at with IPUMC. They are returning to Kansas. We hope to have details on their next steps soon.)

Ascension Sunday

Scripture readings: Acts 1:1-11, Ephesians 1:15-23, John 17:20-26
Pastor’s sermon: “Open the eyes of your heart.”

Last Sunday was a celebration of Mothers and our Confirmation Class. The bi-lingual worship service with Mision Hispana, included Rev. James Preston, our district superintendent. The four Pastors sent our five confirmands out with blessings from the church and the charge to spread the word of the Lord. We heard individual faith statements from Ruby Keutzer, Jackie Schulz, Abraham Dadoub, Daniela and Alejandra Ruiz. Thanks also to their mentors who guided these young lives along with Pastor Emily and Pastor Vickie over the past nine months: Pam Kleinert, Lindsey Elton, Kristi Carpenter, Gregg Mitchell and Vicci Rodgers Keutzer. Gratitude from the confirmands and their families to all who helped with the celebration meal that followed worship, for the bibles and other gifts the youth received from the church! REMEMBER: Sunday – May 23 – on Pentecost Sunday these Youth will lead worship at 10 a.m. They are excited and working hard to make this an inspirational and “contemporary” service including lyrical dance, Christian rock music and much more! Let’s show them our support.

We had a teary and emotional sendoff for Pastor Emily as she completed her internship with us. She leaves graduation today and returns to Michigan where she will complete her CPE (Clinical Pastoral Care) at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo starting in mid-June and ending in August. Then Pastor Emily will report to her commission at Girard United Methodist Church in Coldwater, Michigan where she will be the Lead Pastor. We know how lucky this congregation is to have her guiding their faith journey. Thank you Emily for all you did for us. We will always remember your smile and your spiritual gifts! Girard United Methodist Church 990 Marshall Road, Coldwater - (517) 279-9418. In the attached picture, Emily is wearing the stole given to her by our congregation as a gesture of thanks and blessing for her future.

Construction is underway! If you haven’t driven by the church in the past few days you haven’t seen the scaffolding that is now set up and the work that is underway. Daily working hours will be from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. Watch this weekly newsletter for photos and updates!

Caring for Creation 2010 – CANCELLED for this summer
We didn’t get enough interest in this program to move forward with it this summer. Thanks to Tracey and Gregg Mitchell for all of the work they put into the organization and initial start-up. We will try again next year!

Garden Clean-Up – Thanks to Karyn Prather and her Mom for weeding and to Brent Prather for the new prayer bench and arbor. Karyn said there is more work to be done and asks anyone who is interested to contact her. She will have another gardening “event” in the near future. 773.907.5335 (work) 312.480.5874 (cell)

Church camp registration forms and funds due. Contact Meg Green: mmrgreen@sbcglobal.net for more information. This is a fun and faith-filled weekend for all. The event is in June, but reservations are due now. $85 adults and youth age 12 and older. $55 youth 4-11. Children 3 and younger are free.

Prayers
From Rebecca Flores: "A few days ago my aunt Angie got a disease called celluliase. Today 5/11/10 my uncle's uncle died. His name was Fritz Riess. My cousin Sarah is really sad and so is my uncle. May the Lord be with them."

Tim Rasey is having an angiogram today. Wally Felckowski is preparing for foot surgery. Prayers for them and their families.

Please keep all those who have suffered loss or illness, lack of work, heartbreak or other life challenges in your prayers. Also raise up your joys!
Saturday Garden Clean-Up – This Weekend!
This is from Karyn Prather who is organizing our garden effort this year:
Hi everyone, hope you all are doing well. Spring is in the air and it’s time to make our church garden beautiful! For those who haven’t taken a close look, there are some amazing perennials getting ready to bloom. Janet Spencer forwarded your name as someone who has expressed an interest in helping out. I’d like to organize a garden cleanup effort on Saturday from 9-11am. This will allow us to get the grounds in shape before Mothers Day. I’ll provide coffee, donuts & materials. I’ll need you to bring your garden tools and a willingness to get dirty. Please let me know if you plan to attend. Feel free to invite anyone else who may be interested. We are also working on getting a new arbor and bench for the garden. The intent is to get those in place soon.

“O Lord, our Lord, How Majestic is your name in all the earth!”

This Sunday we celebrate our Earth!
Pastor Emily will lead us in worship as Pastor Vickie is in Nashville with the rest of her Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team in Training participating in the Country Music Half marathon.

There will be NO 8:45 a.m. Bible study this Sunday.

Please take time to read this longer version of our message as there is a lot going on in our church and community this weekend and next week!

What a glorious service last Sunday as we witnessed the baptism of Samantha & Nicolas Knutson who were surrounded by their loving brother Mack, sister Charlie, parents, Pam and John, their grandparents, aunt and cousin. Pastor Vickie was assisted by Pastor Emily and David Foster. We as a congregation were honored to be the witnesses as these two young lives were blessed!

At our Charge Conference Wednesday, April 21 there was a unanimous vote to approve monies that support the next phase of restoration on our church. As early as May 1st you will see workers setting up scaffolding and beginning on an aggressive schedule that could be completed within two months. We will keep you updated through this weekly message. Please make sure our neighbors know that we are investing in our future on the corner of Grace and Keeler. Special thanks to all of the church members who have worked over the past two years to get us to this point as well as those who continue to contribute to our financial support through your offerings and gifts.

Church Clean Up Day last Saturday was a big success. We had over 30 people come to help, including a nice turnout of volunteers from the Martha Group that shares our space on a weekly basis. Both the ladies and men’s bathrooms were repaired and refreshed, the former brides room became recognizable, the nursery was cleaned top to bottom, corner gardens were planted, the boiler room was straightened up (and we didn’t lose anyone in there in the process), all of the pews and floors in the sanctuary were cleaned ... and much more. Thanks to ALL who gave up precious Saturday time to combine for Spring Cleaning! If you have spare time at any time contact the church office or one of the trustees. The “honey do” list isn’t finished yet.

In worship this week Wally and Tina Felckowski will tell us about our April Mission: The United Church of Rogers Park Community Feast.

Take time to share favorite bible passages and faith messages with our confirmation class members by May 5th. On Mother’s Day, May 9th, these young people will commit themselves to serving Jesus and the church: Ruby, Jackie, Alejandra, Daniela and Abraham. You can submit messages by email or mail to Pastor Vickie. Helping to guide these young lives through the confirmation process is our student Pastor Emily Slavicek. May 9th will be Emily’s last Sunday with us and we are preparing a scrapbook of memories and messages for her. We also will be saying thank you and best wishes to Stephanie Escher, our director of music. We also send best wishes to our own member, Teri Lafferty, who is graduating with this large class at Garrett on Friday, May 15 (details below). Supplies will be available during Fellowship for creating bookmarks and messages for scrapbooks. The bilingual service on May 9th will be followed by a fellowship meal. Mission Hispana’s congregation will join us for worship and fellowship on this very important day.

April 30 – Church camp registration forms and funds due. Contact Meg Green: mmrgreen@sbcglobal.net for more information. This is a fun and faith-filled weekend for all. The event is in June but reservations are due now.

Mission Hispana has restarted their after school program every Wednesday (in Spanish) 4 – 6 p.m. For elementary-age children. Contact the church office or Pastor Cecilia for details.

Please keep all those who have suffered loss or illness, lack of work, heartbreak or other life challenges in your prayers. Also raise up your joys! If you are interested in being part of our Prayer Network, or would like to have them pray for a special person or cause, contact Tina or Wally Felckowski: bwf79@sbcglobal.net

Our own Ruby Keutzer is performing in Animal Farm at Lookingglass Theatre in noon and 1:30 shows this weekend. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors, $10 for adults. You can contact the theatre box office directly at: 312-337-0665. Please mention Ruby’s name when you place your order. A large group from IPUMC will be leaving from the church at noon this Sunday for the final show.
