We have entered the time of Lent

We have entered the time of Lent, the forty-day period before Easter. It began this week on Ash Wednesday. We skip Sundays when we count the forty days, because Sundays commemorate the Resurrection. Lent ends on April 3, 2010, the day before Easter. Join us for this journey.

Scripture readings this Sunday:
Deuteronomy 26:1-11 Luke 4:1-13

Sunday’s sermon will be delivered by Emily Slavicek

Thanks to all who worked to prepare our Fat Tuesday celebration, especially our cooks, Sina and Claire Kraneis. And to Lowell Allen and Ellen Star who organized the health kits prepared for distribution to Haiti.
Here is what we collected so far:
59 plastic bags
96 wash clothes
98 combs
109 bars of soap
53 tubes of toothpaste
76 toothbrushes
35 hand towels
101 wash clothes
875 bandaids (6 to a kit)
50 nail clippers

We plan to ship our supplies in the first few days of March. To make complete kits we still need: hand towels, finger and toe nail clippers (no emery boards), toothbrushes (individually wrapped) and toothpaste. Thanks to all who have made contributions and who helped Tuesday night.

Inquiring Class (New Members) Spring 2010
Pastor Vickie’s Class will meet on Sunday mornings after worship. The meetings will consist of a meal and one-hour class. Please note we will meet in the Upstairs Chapel, beginning at 11:30 a.m. and ending at 1:00 p.m. on March 7, 14, 28, April 11 & 18.

Seeking closet musicians!
Our minister of music, Stephanie, is seeking closet musicians to share their musical gifts with the Irving Park UMC community during worship. Easter is coming up. We’d love to pull together some brass! And we want to bring in some special music during worship. She’s willing to help find music or other musicians to play with. Please contact her today! Minister of music: Stephanie Mescher (stephaniemescher@gmail.com)

Mission of the Month: Tree of Life Ministry
32 inches of Christmas snow, wind chills plunging under -20, then storm after storm after paralyzing storm hitting down. Without knowledge from the media or help from their government, over 1000 people are trapped without power and are in dire need of food, water, and propane for heat. It became a life/death situation in a matter of moments. And now, over a month later these people—our fellow Americans—are just being found out about.

Join us in restoring their power.
Our February mission is dedicated to the struggling people of the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations in South Dakota. Hear more about their story and learn how Tree of Life Ministry works to nurture bodies, strengthen the culture, and enhance their Native spirit. Lindsey Elton will share her witness about this mission Sunday, February 28. Donations will be taken during Sunday offerings in February.
