Practicing Peace Series Continues

Scripture readings this Sunday:
Psalm 19
Luke 6:1-11

January Sermon Series — Last Sunday Pastor Vickie started her sermon series “Practicing Peace.” Our world, our communities, and our lives are inundated with violence. Join us in worship as we look at the choices we make and examine if these choices benefit the Common Good and work to bring about peace. Spiritual practices that enhance attitudes of peace will be shared along with stories of people who practice peace in their daily lives. This Sunday’s sermon: It all Started with an “Ordinary Housewife”

Jan. 31—Stand Up, Stand For, Stand With
Feb. 7—The Life-Giving Power of Peace
Feb. 14—Building a Sustainable, Peaceful Commonwealth

Last Sunday we also celebrated the Baptism of Everett Grey Falconer!

Help for the people of Haiti. This Sunday Pastor Lowell will share information on the United Methodist Committee on Relief and work underway in Haiti. He will explain ways we can help.

We are collecting items for Health Kits that will be forwarded to UMCOR for Haiti Relief.  The requested items (IN BULK form not kits) are:
one-gallon sealed plastic bags
hand towels (not kitchen towels), washcloths
large combs, nail files or fingernail clippers
bath-size bars of soap, toothbrushes (individually wrapped)
adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages

Checks/money donations are always welcome.  They may be made out to Irving Park United Methodist Church with "Haiti Relief"  marked in the memo line.  The church will then send out our check for the combined amount of all the donations given, to UMCOR, also at the end of January. Thanks very much! Please contact the church office if you want to hear more about Haiti relief efforts and mission help.

Prayers for:
Frank Certa who is slowly making progress healing, getting his strength back and able to do more things on his own after his heart surgery.  If you would like to provide food to Frank and Anna, or help in other ways, please call the church office.

Kent Keutzer’s mother, Anne, had surgery today and is in recovery. His sister, Karen, is moving into radiation treatment for her breast cancer.

Gerry and Joyce Mylander in the death of Gerry’s brother, Reuben, who passed away at the age of 92. Reuben is survived by his wife, Eunice and their two children and many grandchildren.

David Foster and Dale Hoiberg. Dale’s father underwent emergency surgery just days after David and Dale helped his parents settle into a retirement facility. Dale’s father has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Pastor Vickie’s stepfather, Tom, who remains critically ill.

ASK OUR CONFIRMANDS for more details about the Hunger Weekend Lock-In they experienced earlier this month when they worked at the Humboldt Park shelter preparing food and helping to feed the homeless. Thanks to Pastor Emily and Lindsey Elton for joining our five young Christians for the weekend.
