Message from Pastor - January 25, 2008

January 25, 2008

Warm greetings everyone…

It’s -3 degrees here this morning on a crisp, clear day. This has been a busy week for many of us with Bad Girls of the Bible on Tuesday, Leadership Gathering on Wednesday with our District Superintendent Rev. James Preston, and Worship Team meeting last night. February is right around the corner and with it Lent begins on the 6th with Ash Wednesday. We will have a 7:00am and 7:00pm Ash Wednesday Service. Our hope is that this will allow all an opportunity to begin their Lent in a reflective, receptive mind (and heart!) set.

Last week in the sermon I spoke about the need for us to get out into our community and do the ministry that God is calling Irving Park UMC to perform. I also highlighted that we have an opportunity serve in ministry alongside our Christian sisters and brothers, no matter what our theological differences, when we are doing God’s work for justice, peace, and poverty.

As a local group of Christian Churches we celebrated Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Sunday, January 20th with a celebration the Irving Park Baptist Church. I guess about 100 people were there. Tina and Wally Felckowski and Ellen Star joined me at the celebration. Here are Tina’s reflections on the event…

Sharing the Dream - A Celebration of the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - Jan. 20, 2008

Dr. King had a dream that one day everyone would come together. Come together is exactly what we did when several of us, from many different faiths and cultures, celebrated the life of Dr. King! We attended (for the second time) this beautiful celebration, which included many different ways of expressing gratitiude for the life of Dr. King. We were impressed, especially, by the youth that participated in this year's program. Song, dance, spoken word, and visual displays were presented, by various ones, as we honored this great man. Dr. King would have been pleased to see all the different peoples coming together, in one accord. If you missed this year's celebration, plan to join us for next year's. Come and be a part of helping to make Dr. King's dream come true.

In Christian love,
Tina & Wally Felckowski

May the Kingdom of God, as demonstrated in the lives of Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesus Christ our Lord be kept alive and active in us this day,

Pastor Vickie
